Ceramics and the "not creative" types

Updated: Mar 6, 2022

I cant tell you how many people walk into my workshop and the first thing people say is "I'm not a creative person", as a ceramics tutor I who teaches most days I still can't convince newcomers otherwise...

BUT by the end of my sessions each and every person is amazed with what they've learnt, seen how far they've come and can't believe what they've achieved in the time!

No one will become a world famous artist over night, it takes practise but diving in and getting your hands dirty with clay is the first step. You don't know until you try it!

When I run 16 or even 4 week courses, attendees are amazed when they put week 1's piece next to the last. During my lessons I'm here to help you step by step along the way taking as small or how larger leaps you wish to take.

There's so many techniques you may wish to try depending on what intrigues you the most!

Are you a pattern person?

Sgraffito is a fab technique to try, you can create simple or intricate patterns all drawn by your hand, you can even have a little help and trace a design!

Do you like to design as you go along? Pinching is a technique where you can swap and change your design as you go along, as your hands mould and shape the clay.

Do you enjoy bold colours and prints?

You can create patterns with shaped sponges, why not have a go at tessellating shapes or layering up different colours.

Do you want something pretty but you're not sure about sculpting?

If you love playing with your hair, why not take those designs into clay, plait the clay, create waves, add details with the things you love doing.

Never forget, your creations can be as simple or as detailed as you wish to make them and I'm here to help step by step along the way.

Here's just a few examples of pieces my customers have created. What do you fancy creating?

If you'd like to learn more about ceramics and the processes involved book onto one of my workshops and explore the exciting world of clay!
