Glazing Galore

Check out the before and after glaze firing. When pieces have been coated in a liquid glaze the shade is always muted, pastel and most often a shade of grey or cream, but once the lid goes down and the kiln does its thing the transformation begins. As the temperature slowly rises from nothing right up to 1280 degrees the magic happens, the chemicals start to interact as that chalky powdery glaze begins to liquify and the ingredients begin chemically interacting with each other. Glazed can be shiny, Matt, opaque, transparent, satin feel, metallic, but as you can see, these glazes were high shine glossy and a range of vibrant shades.

At my studio I create every single colour from scratch, no shop brought mass sold colours here! Every one you use at my studio has been created by me using my own unique recipes I designed …I’m a bit of a scientist! (You tell the 15 year old me who hated science that and she’d never believe you!)

Ceramics is full of fascinating processes and glazing is mind boggling once you start exploring the endless possibilities! I love my job!
